Investor Sentiment - Pessimistic or Realistic?

From the Toronto Star - Investors foresee sliding returns:
A growing number of Canadian investors have lowered their expectations for 2006, continuing a trend that began in 2002, a new poll for TD Waterhouse (TSX: TD) suggests.
Has anyone ever seen any research that correlates investor sentiment and actual market performance?

For me personally I would look forward to a small correction as a buying opportunity, given that I'm just starting out.

Its supposed to be a contrarian indicator. I believe there are studies out there detailing this.
